What's Disappearing?
Task disappearance landscape
The federal standard defines each occupation by a set of canonical task statements.
When employers consistently stop mentioning a canonical task across multiple metro areas,
it signals that the work has shifted — the task may be automated, absorbed into tools,
delegated to another role, or assumed as baseline knowledge.
We don’t claim why a task is disappearing. We measure that it is.
Every signal below was confirmed absent across multiple independent U.S. metro areas.

The disappearance spectrum
Not all occupations are losing tasks at the same rate. We group them by how many canonical O*NET tasks are consistently absent from employer postings. Every signal was confirmed across at least two independent metro areas.
Which occupations have the most disappearing tasks?
Ranked by number of canonical O*NET tasks that are consistently absent from employer postings. Each task was missing from 50%+ of analyses in at least 2 independent metro areas. Click any occupation to see the full evidence trail, including which specific tasks are disappearing and which new duties are emerging.

How we measure task disappearance. Our agents analyze live job postings across U.S. metro areas, classifying every sentence as a duty, qualification, or boilerplate. Each duty sentence is semantically compared against all canonical O*NET task statements for the occupation. When a canonical task is not matched by any duty sentence in an analysis, it is recorded as absent. A task is only reported as disappearing when it has been confirmed absent in 50%+ of analyses across at least two independent metro areas, each with at least two completed analyses. This multi-metro gate ensures that disappearance reflects a national pattern, not regional variation.
